At Ion Lab, we’re passionate about bringing new life to classic vehicles and pushing the boundaries of electric mobility. Through our electric vehicle conversions, we showcase the full range of our technical expertise and in-house products. Below, we highlight three unique projects that demonstrate our capabilities in creating tailored, high-performance electric systems.

Classic Mini

Our 1964 classic Mini conversion project is a perfect example of our skills and innovation. This fully restored Mini has been fitted with one of our 2nd Life Mitsubishi Outlander electric motors, giving it a modern electric powertrain while maintaining its classic charm.

We’ve also designed and built custom battery modules for this Mini, with the modules tailored to fit the vehicle’s unique needs. Alongside the battery, we’ve incorporated our own Battery Management System (BMS), ensuring efficient energy storage and performance. The vehicle’s systems are managed by our Vehicle Control Unit (VCU), also developed in-house, providing seamless integration and control across all components.

Subaru

Our 1999 Subaru Impreza WRX conversion is a customer-focused project that truly showcases the capabilities of our in-house technology. The vehicle is powered by a 160kW Nissan Leaf motor, delivering performance that matches the original engine’s torque output, while the vehicle retains its iconic 4WD system.

For this conversion, we’ve designed and built everything from the battery modules to the battery management system, vehicle controller, and thermal management system. All these components work together to provide optimal performance, while ensuring the car remains reliable and efficient under various driving conditions.

Hovercraft

In an exciting and unique project, we installed an electric powertrain into a hovercraft. The challenge here was to design a powertrain that would provide enough propulsion while ensuring the weight and mass distribution was ideal for performance.

The hovercraft is powered by a 23kW air-cooled 96V electric motor, specifically chosen for its ability to deliver the right amount of power for this application. Our team carefully considered the weight distribution to maintain the hovercraft’s performance and efficiency on the water and land.
